USE: Septic tanks are used for the collecting and partial treatment of waste water from households, as a temporary solution for waste water treatment on areas with, as yet, no existing sewage systems. A septic tank can be used for a maximum population of 50 people. The discharge of waste water from septic tanks into open waters is not allowed, but it can be routed into the ground if they pose no danger to drinking water sources.

OPERATION: In septic tanks, the process of anaerobic biological decomposition begins but is not complete. The septic tank has to be emptied at least once a year. A non-flow-through septic tank is a closed tank in which waste water is being collected. Capacity of septic tank for dry toilet has to be at least 500 l/person, and for household waste water at least 3000 l/person.

OPERATION: The septic tank is buried underground. It has to be installed on location with easy access for maintenance and emptying. It can be installed under surfaces either with or without vehicular access.
